Thanks for the advice - I added the two lines as new ones after the following for the file named .htaccess:

Order allow,deny
Deny from all

Order allow,deny
Allow from all

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

But sadly it didn't like it one bit
I have no idea of the syntax rules in this context , but I'm happy to try again ....
